OPEN LETTER TO PARENTS 03/17/2020

Dear Parent,

The purpose of this letter is to share with you our response as church leadership in our service to you as you lead your family through everything surrounding COVID-19 and what the World Health Organization has issued a “pandemic.”  We understand that this circumstances is our present and rapidly changing reality; however, these circumstances do not have to determine our future.

The world desperately needs leaders who are forward-looking, centered in grace, and poised with peace. You as a parent have the opportunity in this moment to lead your family.  You carry influence that sets the atmosphere in your home.  Understand that your influence isn’t determined by how you feel in the moment; it’s about making the right decisions that will pave the way for a generation to follow.

How we choose to respond right now will influence history.  If we allow history to teach us in this moment, we remember that God’s people have always found a way to overcome.  Let’s choose to see the opportunity that is before us.  Humanity is in disorder, causing an imposed Sabbath.  Let’s lean into God’s truth, honor authority, choose to rise, and discover new solutions to our world’s problems.

Jewish Holocaust survivor, Victor Frankl, wrote in his book, A Man’s Search for Meaning, "You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.”  Frankl’s courage and perspective helped save many lives in a dire circumstance.  Although our circumstances today are drastically different, we share the common threat that is the spirit of fear.  We still have the opportunity in this moment to either give into the fear of the unknown, or we can respond in faith to trust our God who knows all, hears our prayers, and promises to be with us.

I believe the generation we are leading has the answers to our crisis.  God has primed this generation of digital natives for change in a rapidly changing society.  They have been given access to understand conceptual knowledge more than any generation in history.  What they lack is contextual knowledge, wisdom, and the authority to execute their ideas.

The path to unlocking this generation starts with having conversations centered around questions of identity, belonging, and purpose.  Your permission of self-discovery of God in their lives will liberate this generation to activate their innate inner drive to be autonomous, self-determined, and connected to one another.  Do not hold back telling them stories of God’s faithfulness.  A pragmatic and cautious generation is looking for your blessing to release them in their gifts, to be encouraged and guided through the unknown.

We are living in a Joel 2:28 generation, where God’s Spirit meets the need of this generation to know Him.  By the leading of the the Spirit, sons and daughters will prophesy, interpreting the visions and dreams of former generations.  God will speak within the context of the rules and platform as defined by this generation, redeeming the language of culture and using it to convey the message of Jesus.  This generation will emerge as the generation that influences history because they are uniquely aligned to redeem it.

The best is truly yet to come!
